Spend a week learning the music and monastic theology of St. Hildegard of Bingen, the first named composer in the West, Doctor of the Church, Benedictine abbess, visionary, healer, and preacher. In this workshop, led by expert scholars and performers of Hildegard, Dr. Alison Altstatt, Dr. Rosemary Heredos, and Sr. Jeana Visel OSB, participants will engage her music within the context of her extraordinary and novel musical theology and within the daily rhythm of liturgical prayer with the monks of Saint Meinrad Archabbey. The focus of this immersive week will be on applying Hildegard’s music to contemporary Catholic liturgy. The workshop will culminate in singing a special Mass based on Hildegard’s music at the historic German parish of St. Boniface in Fulda, Indiana followed by a festive dinner.

Check-in opens at 2pm CDT on Sunday, May 17, and the workshop begins at 3pm. We will conclude shortly before noon on Friday, May 22.

There is an opportunity for a limited number of individual in-person voice lessons with Dr. Rosemary Heredos on the Sunday and Friday before and after the workshop begins (available on a first-come, first-serve basis).
Organ Accompaniment of Gregorian Chant, Parts I & II
Online lectures with Q & A via Zoom, with Dr. Horst Buchholz

Part I: To Play or Not to Play, That Is the Question (approx 90 minutes, including Q & A)
Examining organ accompaniment of chant, styles and principles, plus tips to craft your own.
Monday, March 23, 2026 at 7 pm Chicago time

The subject of chant accompaniment is a topic of lively discussion in the chant community. When might one wish to accompany chant? What does accompaniment do to the chant? These and other questions will be investigated, especially with regard to the relationship of organ support to congregational singing.

The bottom line: there are many ways to accompany chant depending on the situation, and there are a number of critical factors that will determine your success. We will explore these factors: whether or not to play the melody, how to determine chords and inversions, alternatim singing of schola and congregation, use of organ stops, manuals and pedals (or manuals only), observations about male and female voices, and improvisation.

Lecture will provide items of interest to beginning and experienced organists alike, and study materials to “take home". Several demonstrations will be included.

Part II: Techniques for crafting your own organ scores (approx 90 minutes, including Q & A)
Monday, April 20, 2026 at 7 pm Chicago time

Part II builds upon the basic techniques of chant accompaniment learned in Part I, expanding with harmonic coloring and transposition of chants. Freer forms of organ accompaniment (e.g. without melody) and melodies in the left hand (tenor cantus) will also be examined.

prerequisite: completion of Part I

https://www.chantacademy.com/lecture-series
Bundle both Parts I and II for a reduction in tuition.
info@chantacademy.com

Saint Meinrad Institute for Sacred Music, St. Meinrad, IN, will host a concert by organist Gail Archer titled “Meditations on the Mystery of the Holy Trinity by Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992)” on March 1, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. Central Time, in the Archabbey Church.

Olivier Messiaen, perhaps the most famous Catholic composer of the 20th century, wrote the Meditations on the Mystery of the Holy Trinity in 1969. The work consists of nine pieces for solo organ which explore the central tenets of the Roman Catholic faith. Each movement is headed by a quotation from the Summa Theologica by St. Thomas Aquinas. The composer also integrates Gregorian chant and birdsong into each movement to elucidate Aquinas’ trinitarian theology through music.

Archer is an international concert organist, recording artist, choral conductor, and lecturer. She was the first American woman to play the complete works of Olivier Messiaen for the centennial of the composer’s birth in 2008. Time Out New York recognized the Messiaen cycle as “Best of 2008” in classical music and opera.

Archer is director of the music program at Barnard College (Columbia University), where she conducts the Barnard-Columbia Chorus and Chamber Singers. She is a faculty member of the Harriman Institute at Columbia University and serves as college organist at Vassar College. She is also artistic director of the artist and young artist organ recital series at historic Central Synagogue, New York City, and the founder of Musforum, www.musforum.org, an international network for women organists to promote and affirm their work.

The program is free and open to the public. Registration is not required. Parking is available in the Guest House and student parking lots. For more information, contact Krista Hall during business hours at 812-357-6501.
I attended this beautiful event in Kraków in 2022 and am happy to pass along the announcement of next summer's workshop. The sessions on contemporary choral music will be directed by Elena Bird-Zolnick (who was on the faculty for CMAA's Colloquium 2025) and Christopher Mueller (@CGM):

7 days. 450 singers. Historic churches. Plainchant and polyphony. Each summer the Dominican Liturgical Center of Kraków organizes a week-long conference on liturgical music, with workshops, concerts, talks on spirituality and sacred art, etc. It is held at the medieval priory of Holy Trinity in the heart of the old town in Kraków and gathers over 450 music lovers from Poland and, in the last four years, from all over the world! In 2021 we successfully expanded our program by adding workshops, liturgies, and talks in English. The conference is called the Extraordinary Music Workshop (click here to watch the EMW 2023 recap video) and is designed to have participants experience the profound beauty of ancient musical traditions of the Church in their organic development and in the spirit of continuity, as envisioned by the Second Vatican Council. That is why we offer workshops in Gregorian and Byzantine chant, as well as in traditional and contemporary sacred polyphony. Here you can learn more about our program, watch videos and see pictures from previous editions and read testimonies of our participants: www.extraordinary.music.

Our faculty in the past have included, among others, Fr. Robert Mehlhart, OP, PhD (President of Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music in Rome), Fr. James Moore, OP, DMA (Oakland, CA), Fr. Innocent Smith, OP, PhD (Washington, DC), Dr. Elena Bird-Zolnick (St. Paul, MN), Mr. Christopher Mueller (Louisville, KY), Ms. Grace Feltoe (Perth, Australia), Fr. Dawid Kusz, OP, DMA (Kraków, Poland), Fr. Lawrence Lew, OP (Oxford, UK), and Mr. Andriy Shkrabyuk (Lviv, Ukraine).

The next edition will be held in Kraków July 6-12, 2026. You will be able to study choral music with Dr. Elena Bird-Zolnick and Mr. Christopher Mueller, learn Gregorian Chant with Prof. Susi Ferfoglia and Prof. Michal Slawecki and even dive into the mysterious beauty of Byzantine Chant with Mr. Andriy Shkrabyuk. Save the date now! Registration will open in mid-January and we hope you can join us this summer.
