Hymns & Spiritual songs from Spain
  • I am in the very initial preproduction stages of planning an album of Hymns and Christian Spiritual songs from Spain, for the Dream Rodeo project, with vocalist Sonia Salas, who did our album of Mexican Hymns, however, whenever I try to search for material, I wind up with Spanish language material from a latin American background, and since I do not speak Spanish, I am handicapped greatly in my searches.

I need to find 8 songs for the project.

I know there is a great deal of experience in this organization, and I seek your advice and direction. Can anyone please point me to a source of this kind of traditional material from Spain?

If you wish to see what Dream Rodeo is about, here are two places you can look...

The web site can be found here...  http://www.dreamrodeo.com/

    Thank you for your assistance.

  • You should probably contact Chuck Giffen on here, he has a great collection of Spanish resources, and could direct you to some nice pieces.
  • Thank you!

How would one go about contacting Chuck Giffen? (FORGIVE ME, I'M A TOTAL NEWBIE TO THIS!)

Actually, I don't personally have a great collection of Spanish pieces, although I've edited a piece here and there for CPDL. I think that ContraBombarde might be referring to the page ChoralWiki:Spanish Composers - Renaissance Era at CPDL (on that page, one can click on other eras to get, say Medieval, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Early 20th Century, and Modern era Spanish composers).

Here's a YouTube clip of a late-15th-century Spanish-language religious piece (Dios te salve cruz preçiosa): is it of interest, perchance?

I first discovered this anonymous work during my childhood, in a more robust EMI recording - 1972 - from David Munrow's Early Music Consort, complete with throaty tenor and buzzing crumhorns. This latter version was reissued on CD not very long ago (different label) and an extract from the relevant track (No. 22) can be found here:
