CDL - What Observations?
  • This year marks the CDLth anniversary of Monteverdi's birth. Are any here programming any of his music in memoriam? Doing so would be to recognise an often overlooked giant of church music. There exists no music of a greater ecclesiastical register than his for solemn liturgy and ritual - none, except maybe G. Gabrieli's, that approaches the splendour of his poly-choral works, though there is much to which a single choir can do justice.

I guess I'll have to learn one of the solo motets...that's all we can manage.

    Seriously, though, that <e f g#> <d f f#> <e e g#> over "suo dolor" is as painful as it is striking.

    There exists no music...
Must not be as many Isaac snobs out MJO's way.

  • ...snobs...
Well, as it turns out, this is also the Dth anniversary of Isaac's death.
So, there is much to celebrate this year besides those nailed theses of a certain Augustinian monk - who loved music, especially that of his near contemporary, Josquin.

Overlooked are Montiverdi's Mass settings, which are quite varied and some movents could be performed by a modest choir.
