St Mary’s Church is seeking a skilled organist and choir director to serve as Director of Music, conducting the parish’s two choral ensembles: an adult mixed choir, which sings a large repertory of polyphonic music from the Renaissance to the present, and a Schola Gregoriana, which specializes in liturgical chant. The church has two nineteenth-century pipe organs; a chancel organ by Garrett House (1872; I:8), and a gallery organ by Carl Barckhoff, currently being reinstalled after a complete restoration by Parsons Pipe Organ Builders (1890; II:30). The Director of Music is responsible for providing liturgical music at the 9:45 am choir Mass on Sundays, playing the organ and directing the choir, as well as supervising cantors (or serving as a cantor) for other weekend Masses. There is a mid-week rehearsal for the choir (currently Wednesday evenings) as well as the schola (currently Saturday afternoons). Additional choral liturgies celebrated throughout the year include Masses on holy days of obligation, particularly the parish’s patronal festival of the Assumption (August 15); Solemn Vespers and Benediction for the feasts of Christ the King and Corpus Christi; and sung Compline on Sunday evenings during Advent and Lent. A longtime parish organist is in place and plays for weekend Masses on Saturday evening and Sunday noon, as well as mid-week weddings and funerals.

Compensation for this position (15-20 hours per week) is negotiable and will be commensurate with training and experience; travel expenses will be taken into account for musicians travelling from Syracuse or Rochester. For full consideration, applications should be received by April 2, 2017; the position is available in June. Inquiries can be sent to Fr. Frank Lioi at (315) 252-9545 or flioi@rochester.rr.com.
