    St Mary’s Cathedral is the spiritual home of Sydney’s Catholic community, and the seat of the Archbishop of Sydney. The Cathedral plays a vital role in the spiritual and cultural life of Sydney, as well as Australia in general. The Cathedral Choir is Australia’s oldest continuing musical organisation and is integral to the Cathedral’s life and worship. Continuing support from successive Archbishops has provided for a professional music foundation encompassing 24 boy choristers who are educated at the Cathedral’s on-site (non-boarding) Choir School, 12 lay clerks who are professional singers, a specialised program for former choristers whose voices have changed, and an adult volunteer choir. The Cathedral Music Department operates an extensive program, providing and facilitating music for all services and events that take place in the Cathedral.

    The Role
    The Assistant Director of Music deputises for the Director of Music as required, has special responsibility for the provision of organ music in the Cathedral, the training and development of the probationer choristers and the Cathedral Scholars (boys with changed voices), the direction of the Cathedral’s volunteer choir – the St Mary’s Singers, and assists with the administration and strategic direction of the Cathedral Music Department.

    The Person
    The Assistant Director of Music will possess the following qualifications, skills and experience:
    • A proven record of exemplary performance of Church Music at the highest professional level
    • Appropriate musical and academic qualifications
    • Experience working in a similar Cathedral music foundation incorporating child choristers, professional adult singers, and daily choral services
    • A demonstrated commitment to the ethos, traditions and values of the Catholic Church
    • An appreciation and understanding of the liturgical traditions of the Catholic Church
    • A current Working With Children Check Clearance in New South Wales, or the willingness to submit to a Working With Children Check.
