• Does anyone know if there's any chant that uses the beginning of the Gospel of John "In principio erat Verbum, et Verbum erat apud Deum, et Deus erat Verbum"? I know that we are going to read that passage on Christmas morning this year, but I couldn't find any chant with those lyrics. Thank you so much for helping.

If you're looking for tones for the priest to chant the Gospel reading, see the Graduale Romanum. You can download the 1961 edition as a PDF from the musicasacra.com resources page; then the Gospel tone is on page 1003 of the PDF file (which is 1219 pages long). There are three tones to choose from.

  • Thank you chonak. I rather was trying to see if any chant (the proper of the day) has that text as lyrics. But the idea you gave can be a good start. Thank you so much.

While looking through the Salzinnes Antiphonal... A Matins Responsory with this text,

    http://salzinnes.simssa.ca/#z=2&n=5&i=1-036v.tif

N.B. Continues on the next page. If you find the Latin text to be difficult to read, the right hand panel has drop down menus with texts etc. The chant is straight-forward to read.

    and again here,

    EDIT
Not sure the links are working properly but there are two responsories for this text the first on page 36v mode 7 version and over the page on 37r a (special) version in Mode 8.

  • Thank you so much tomjaw. That's really an impressive finding; just amazing. The text on the right side is very helpful. Thank you again.
