I would also add: the differences between tones such as these are something that not just the priest, but also the choir director should know inside out, as one never knows when it will be necessary to cue the choir for the correct response "on the fly".

Thinking about it, I'm rather rusty on the tones for the Gospel other than the more ancient la-fa-la-sol-sol-la one.
