  • MARRIAGE & FAMILY LIFE DIRECTOR
    The Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon is searching for a dynamic director for its Marriage & Family Life Office. The Marriage and Family Life Director is responsible for promoting an authentic vision of marriage and family life in the archdiocese based upon Catholic Church teaching. The successful candidate will serve as a catalyst for the renewal and strengthening of sacramental marriage and family life in the Archdiocese of Portland.
    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITES:
    • Implements the mission, goals and objectives of the Church’s vision of sacramental marriage and family life as presented in such documents as: Familiaris Consortio, A Family Perspective in Church and Society and Marriage, Love & Life in the Divine Plan.
    • Offers practical tools, training and education for clergy and lay ministers to assist marriages and families in living out their faith and their commitment to one another, Christ and the Church.
    • Serves as a resource for parishes and vicariates by developing archdiocesan programs to enhance family ministry, marriage preparation and enrichment, formerly married ministry (divorced and widowed), natural family planning, and faith-based parenting; specializes in parish family ministry and highlights the family dimension of all areas of ministry.
    • Organizes and sponsors a variety of workshops, retreats and conferences to benefit parish leadership in their work with issues regarding sacramental marriage and family life.
    • Provides information, referrals and assistance to families, couples and persons wishing to connect with existing sacramental, medical, mental health, educational and other support resources.
    • Interfaces and maintains a professional relationship with apostolates, organizations and Catholic movements dedicated to marriage and family life such as Marriage Encounter, Engaged Encounter, Retrouvaille, and Northwest Family Services.

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Education, Pastoral Ministry, Theology, or Social Work and a minimum of 3 to 5 years’ experience in a diocese; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the required work and responsibilities.
    • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of Catholic marriage and family life, and familiarity with and commitment to Church teaching on the same.
    • Good understanding of federal, state, and county services for families and the aging.
    • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally (including oral presentations), and in writing, and using social media; able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, parishes, schools, vendors, and the general public.
    • Strong interpersonal skills, creativity, decision-making, use of discretion (work frequently contains confidential/sensitive matters), teamwork, negotiation, public relations, fostering the Church’s mission, independent judgment/action, supervising, problem analysis, theological/pastoral analysis, ability to handle multiple projects/priorities.
    • Proficiency with computer and basic office software.
    • Practicing Catholic required; valid driver’s license required.
    • Bilingual Spanish preferred.
