Audit Tyrannus Anxius
  • I have spent two days seeking the chant notation for Audit Tyrannus Anxius, the Matins hymn for the Feast of the Holy Innocents, and have struck out. There is one verse set to notation in the Liber Hymnarius, but I prefer the melody of Salvete Flores Martyrum. Is anyone familiar with a source which contains this notation for all verses of Audit Tyrannus Anxius?

    Part 1 History...
The Audit Tyrannus Anxius is part of a longer hymn by Prudentius, 12th Hymn of the Cathemerion, called the Hymnus Epiphaniae.
The modern E.F. Matins Hymn consists of lines 93-100 and 133-6 of the original. N.B. the Lauds Hymn Salvete Flores Martyrum is also part of this Hymn, lines 125-132. Other parts of the full hymn are also used in other hymns in the Divine Office.

While I have selectively quoted from Hymns of the Roman Liturgy, Connelly. More excellent commentary and Translations can be found here,
    http://musicasacra.com/wpcproduct/the-hymns-of-the-breviary-and-missal-matthew-britt/
I have a hard copy but a scan / pdf was to be found on the main CMAA site, although I can't find the link at the moment.

    Part 2 Latin texts,
This first text was in use in 1568... I have taken this from an unpublished work on Latin Hymns, this has plenty of almost impenetrable references... N.B. I do not have a translation.

    Salvete flores martyrum,
    Quos lucis ipso in limine
    Christi insecutor sustulit
    Ut turbo nascentes rosas.

    Quid crimen Herodem juvat?
    Vos, prima Christi victima,
    Grex immolatorum tener,
    Palma et coronis luditis.

    Audit tyrannus anxius
    Adesse regum principem;
    Exclamat amens nuntio:
    Ferrum, satelles, corripe;

    Mas omnis infans occidat,
    Scrutare nutricum sinus,
    Fraus ne qua furtim subtrahat
    Prolem virilis indolis.'

    Transfigit ergo carnifex
    Mucrone destricto furens
    Effusa nuper corpora
    Animasque rimatur novas.

    O barbarum spectaculum!
    Vix interemptor invenit
    Locum minutis artubus
    Quo plaga descendat patens.

    Quid proficit tantum nefas?
    Inter coævi sanguinis
    Fluenta solus integer
    Impune Christus tollitur.

    Sit Trinitati gloria,
    Virtus, honor, victoria,
    Quæ dat coronam testibus
    Per sæculorum sæcula.

Another option for this Hymn is found in The Liturgical Year, Vol. 2., Gueranger, pg. 444. Dom Gueranger has taken all the verses relevant to the Holy Innocents from the original Hymn by Prudentius... A translation can be found on the same page referenced above.
Here are links to .pdf copies of the liturgical year, http://www.theliturgicalyear.org/theliturgicalyearpdfs.html

    1. Audit tyrannus anxius
    Adesse regum Principem,
    Qui nomen Israel regat,
    Teneatque David regiam.

    2. Exclamat amens nuntio:
    Successor instat, pellimur:
    Satelles, i, ferrum rape,
    Perfunde cunas sanguine.

    3. Mas infans omnis occidat;
    Scrutare nutricum sinus;
    Interque materna ubera
    Ensem cruentet pusio.

    4. Suspecta per Bethlem mihi
    Puerperarum est omnium
    Fraus, ne qua furtim subtrahat
    Prolem virilis indolis.

    5. Transfigit ergo carnifex
    Mucrone destricto furens
    Effusa nuper corpora
    Animasque rimatur novas.

    6. Locum minutis artubus
    Vix interemptor invenit,
    Quod plaga descendat patens,
    Juguloque major pugio est.

    7. O barbarum spectaculum!
    Illisa cervix cautibus
    Spargit cerebrum lacteum,
    Oculosque per vulnus vomit.

    8. Aut in profundum palpitans
    Mersatur infans gurgitem,
    Cui subter arctis faucibus
    Singultat unda, et halitus

    9. Salvete flores martyrum,
    Quos lucis ipso in limine
    Christi insecutor sustulit
    Ceu turbo nascentes rosas.

    10. Vos prima Christi victima,
    Grex immolatorum tener,
    Aram sub ipsam simplices
    Palma et coronis luditis.

    11. Quid proficit tantum nefas?
    Quid crimen Herodem juvat?
    Unus tot inter funera
    Impune Christus tollitur.

    12. Inter coævi sanguinis
    Fluenta, solus integer,
    Ferrum, quod orbabat nurus,
    Partus fefellit Virginis.

    13. Sic stulta Pharaonis mali
    Edicta quondam fugerat,
    Christi figuram præferens,
    Moses, receptor civium.

    Part 3 Melodies,
Of course the melodies between the Audit Tyrannus Anxius and the Salvete Flores Martyrum are interchangeable.

The Global Chant database has only one melody listed for the Audit Tyrannus... this is normal as the database does not list many books including Matins Hymns. A melody from the Liber Responsorialis pro festis I. classis; Solesmes, 1895 is pasted below,

    image

Note this melody is a variation of the Melody for the Salvete flores found in the L.U. on pg. 431 / 432

Other melodies can be found here,
    http://www.globalchant.org/text-details.php?text=Salvete-flores-martyrum-quos
Not all these melodies can be found easily but here are some I can post references for,
    Mode 8 L.U. pg 407
    Mode 3 see below
Mode 1 L.U. 431 Melody for Salvete flores... as above,

    Mode 3,

This is another Melody used for this Hymn in Antiphonale Monasticum

Another Hymn for the Holy Innocents is one by St. Bede...
Text below from “Douglass series of Christian Greek and Latin Hymns. Latin Hymns, Vol.1. 1874 pg 79.
Bracketed text from The Liturgical Year, Vol. 2., Gueranger, pg. 291 (see link above for .pdf copies) Translation can be found on pg. 291.

    Hymnum canentes martyrum
    Dicamus Innocentium,

    Quos terra flentes perdidit,

    Gaudens sed æthra suscipit.

    Vultum patris per sæcula
    Quorum tuentur angeli,
    Ejusque laudant gratiam,
    Hymnum canentes martyrum.

    Quos rex peremit impius,

    Pius sed auctor colligit,
    Secum beatos collocans,
    In luce regni perpetis.
    Qui mansiones singulis
    Largitus in domo patris,

    Donat supernis sedibus
    Quos rex peremit impius.

    (Bimos et infra parvulos
    Herodis ira perculit;
    Finesque Bethlehemiticos,
    Sancto respersit sanguine.
    Præclara Christo splenduit
    Mors innocens fidelium:
    Cœlis ferebant Angeli
    Bimos et infra parvulos)

    Vox in Rama percrebuit,
    Lamenta luctus maximi,
    Rachel suos cum lacrymis

    Perfusa flevit filios.
    Gaudent triumpho perpeti
    Tormenta quique vicerant,
    Quorum gemens ob verbera
    Vox in Rama percrebuit.

    Ne, grex pusille, formides
    Dentes leonis perfidos,
    Pastor bonus nam pascua
    Vobis dabit cœlestia.
    Agnum Dei qui candidum
    Mundo sequeris tramite,
    Manus latronis impias
    Ne, grex pusille, formides.

    Absterget omnem lacrymam,
    Vestris Pater de vultibus,
    Mors vobis ultra non nocet,
    Vitæ receptis mœnibus.
    Qui seminent in lacrymis
    Longo metent in gaudio,
    Genis lugentum Conditor
    Absterget omnem lacrymam.

    O quam beata civitas
In qua Redemptor venitur, (In qua Redemptor nascitur:)
    Natoque primae martyrum
    In qua dicantur hostiæ.
    Nunquam vocaris parvula
    In civitatum millibus,
Ex qua novus dux ortus est,
    O quam beata civitas !

    Adstant nitentes fulgidis
    Ejus throno nunc vestibus,
    Stolas suas qui laverant
    Agni rubentes sanguine.
    Qui perpetis pro patriæ
    Regno gementes fleverant,
    Læti Deo cum laudibus
    Adstant nitentes fulgidis.

  • Tomjaw, I am most grateful to you for plunging into this and undertaking the research. So THIS is what real research looks like. My two days spent online certainly didn't produce anything like yours! I was just scanning some of the pages of the Gueranger reference you posted, and it's pretty incredible. Much gratitude to you for your contributions here!

Just been on the Cantus Database, this is from the Augsberg Antiphonal c. 1580...

    http://www.uni-regensburg.de/Fakultaeten/phil_Fak_I/Musikwissenschaft/cantus/microfilm/copenhagen/vol2/images/103.jpg

Other links to manuscripts can be found here, and O joy some of them have links so we can see them without having to go to a library!
    http://cantusdatabase.org/id/008389

The above has only taken a hour and a half while travelling by train to and from work, and a hour or so at home, I had already a file on the Hymns for the Holy innocents so have been updating and expanding the research.

Re-typeset versions of the Hymns above are in progress...

The Mode 3 melody for "Hostis Herodes impie" is the same as the usual(?) melody for "A solis ortus cardine."

"Hymnum canentes martyrum" has an excellent translation by J. M. Neale in his Medieval Hymns.

  • Part of me thought upon seeing this title of this thread, "Uh oh, someone must not think highly of their boss after seeing their annual review . . ."
  • Part of me fears becoming the anxious tyrant on the organ bench.

Yes the mode 3 melody is associated with the Epiphany Hymns, I should point out that the Monastic melody from the Antiphonale Monasticum as shown above, has slight differences to the melody found in the L.U. Also a third variation is used by the Dominicans.

The melody as found in the Augsberg Antiphonal above, is also used for the Epiphany Hymn, Hostis Herodis...

I think we had a thread on the Epiphany Hymns, so further discussion on such topics could revive that thread. EDIT I can't seem to find it, so when I have some time I will start one, with History / texts / melodies / and lots of re-typset Hymns!

Have been busy with Advent Hymns...
    1. Melody as found in the L.U., Text from the Liturgical Year, Gueranger.

    image

    2. Melody and text from the Augsberg Antiphonal. For ease of use I have written the Latin text out in full rather than use the abbreviations found in the manuscript.

    image

    3. Just in case the modifications to the melody to fit the text found in the version above... I have completed a version in the modern style with Elisions.

    image

I have started working on versions using the other melodies listed in posts above, and I also hope to set St. Bede's Hymn...

  • tomjaw, that first pdf of yours is exactly what I had been looking for! Thank you for including a full 14 verses, and translation. The version I had crafted only had 6 verses. The children's choir has been hard at work preparing for the Feast of the Holy Innocents. Ven. Bede's "Hymnum Canentes Martyrum" will be sung in English as our recessional song (The Hymn for Conquering Martyrs Raise).

expeditus1 I added a doxology to Guerangers choice of verses from Prudentius, but this is of course Ad lib. There are two doxologies used with this Hymn, I have set it with the one found in the Augsberg Antiphonal (and other places) more on this can be found here,

    http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/12607a.htm

The other doxology for this hymn is the usual one for Christmas etc. "Jesu, tibi sit gloria..."
