Question about the Roman Liturgical Calendar (USCCB website)

    Hey all,

    I have been trying to figure out why some of the days on the USCCB Roman Liturgical Calendar are marked red [August calendar: http://bit.ly/1w22r2l].

    At first I thought it was because the Gospel was proper, as it is for example on the "Memorial of the Passion of Saint John the Baptist" on August 29.
    But that doesn't fit because on September 20th, the "Memorial of Saint Andrew Kim Tae-gŏn, Priest, and Paul Chŏng Ha-sang, and Companions, Martyrs" the readings are not proper. [September Calendar: http://bit.ly/1jqES35]

    Anyone care to take a crack at it?

    I think it refers to the liturgical color. Red is generally used for martyrs, the Holy Spirit, certain feasts of The Lord, etc.

    Seems right - the other memoriae are headed in white, and the ferial days in green.

    The vestment colors only reflect mandatory commemorations, not optional ones or votives.
